subject: Taking Your Senior Pictures [print this page]

The first step to getting your senior pictures taken is to find the right photographer. Nowadays you can go on the internet and find someone who has an online gallery of their pictures.

Find a photographer whose style you like and who takes good, quality pictures. Since there are probably going to be several in your area that you would be happy with their shots, start comparing prices.

Picture taking is a competitive business; there are many different packages to choose from and each charge different prices. Find someone who offers you the right amount of prints and sizes at a price that you are comfortable with.

Be careful to check what the packages include, some people charge per outfit change, per pose, and per location. Find a package that allows you to do as much as you want in front of the camera at the lowest price.

After finding the right person to take your pictures, decide where you want to go before your appointment. This will make the entire session go a lot faster and run more smoothly.

There are so many places to choose from, so you want to find the ones that will look best on camera and some places that you hang out at often. For instance, is you play sports in high school, you pay want to take a few pictures on the football or soccer field, or on the basketball or tennis court.

If you're a swimmer you may want to take a picture at your school's pool. All of these places show who are: an athlete. And they show off a big part of your high school career.

Other places to go are parks, mountains, by rivers, lakes, or oceans, or at downtown locations. These locations will provide beautiful, natural backdrops to your senior pictures.

Take advantage of these places, especially at sunset when the light reflects off of the water or provides good shadows behind you. Local downtown areas where you live usually provide beautiful locations to take pictures.

Old brick buildings or trains look great in photographs, and can make your photographs look timeless. Don't forget that you can also take pictures in a studio, allowing you to have dramatic things like a solid white backdrop.

After deciding on the location, decide what you are going to wear. If you pick the locations first, you can really decide what outfits will look best with your surroundings.

Like your parents always told you, it's important to dress nicely for pictures. A typical snapshot is one done in your cap and gown; it shows the world that you're graduating.

Though it is a classic pose, it isn't too exciting and it fails to show your personality. Make sure that you decide what to wear well in advance so you aren't left scrambling the day of your appointment.

Again, if you're in sports, wear your uniform, pose with your letterman jacket, or hold your basketball or bat. Maybe you play music, some of the best shots are done with you holding your guitar or playing on a grand piano.

If you're more of the scholar type, hold a small book, it makes you look refined. You should also take some photographs in more casual clothing so you look more comfortable in your everyday clothes.

Don't just wear jeans and t-shirt, though, you want to make sure you look good in the pictures because they are going to last forever in yearbooks and in frames on your parents' mantle. Wear clothes that show your personal style and that you're comfortable in.

This will allow you to feel the most comfortable in front of the camera, and when you feel comfortable, you look better.

Finally, while taking pictures, make sure that you are comfortable and having fun.

You always see crazy poses in pictures where the subject looks noticeably uncomfortable. Take pictures that make you look and feel confident, because those will truly capture your personality.
