subject: The New Gaming Trilogy Crysis [print this page]

As part of an ongoing effort to advance features of the video gaming work, Cryteck created Crysis to take gamers to the next level. Published by Electronic Arts for Microsoft Windows the first game in the series was released in November 2007 and immediately garnered praises for its achievement in graphical design and has now become a favorite among players.

For those who love concepts of the future, this game begins when an ancient alien spacecraft is found beneath the ground on Earth underneath an island in the Philippines. The player becomes Jack Dunn, a US Delta Force commando who has the nickname of Nomad. Futuristic weapons and equipment ensure a level of play that allows the player to be competitively balanced against all opponents. His "Nano Muscle Suit" is but one example and was based on real-life military equipment now being designed to be worn into company.

Set in the year 2020, North Korean forces take control of Lingshan Islands. Dr. Rosenthal who leads a group of US civilians sends out a call of distress also noting they have found something of paramount importance that will change the world. Jack Dunn, as Nomad, leads his Delta Force Team, Raptor, to help, but as they complete a HALO jump which is interfered with by an unknown flying body that causes the team to separate.

After finding each other, during battle against the Korean insurgents two of the team are killed by an unknown entity. The team continues to search and eventually finds some of the hostages killed while others are found barely alive or frozen in ice. After finding Dr. Rosenthal an artifact predating human life by two million years is discovered and emits negative temperatures so cold that Dr. Rosenthal freezes. Only Nomad's Nanosuit saves him.

This leads to an invasion of the island by US forces which begins at the original excavation site. Soon the mountain begins to disintegrate revealing an enormous structure. After his capture by Kyong's men he watches as a hostage is killed and the cavern leading to the structure is blown open. The energy pulse that is generated by the structure kills Kyong's men and Kyong and Nomad battle until one dies. Although one hostage, Dr. Rosenthal's daughter, Helena, is rescued, Nomad is trapped on the island.

He then ventures into the alien structure where he not only discovers zero gravity, but alien scientists as well. It soon becomes apparent that the alien machines are an invasion army and as he heads outside he encounters more, but manages to escape anyway. He finds a man called the Prophet who has engineered weapons to use against the alien technology.

Nomad must rescue Helena whose plane crashed and flies them to the carrier. He is told that a nuclear strike of the island has been ordered, but Helena warns him that the alien device may absorb energy rather than destroys the machine. After the weapon is launched, the sphere absorbs the energy and released an alien counter-offensive. Helena reconfigures Nomad's Nanosuit and turns it into a walking weapon. The object is to save the hostages and win the war against the aliens, but it may take all three games in the series to accomplish the goal.

Crysis can be played with as many as 32 players through the Gamespy Network. It requires users to have existing userid or compels them to create a new one. In this design there are two different modes, each with six maps. One can selected a death-match mode called Instant Action or opt for the challenge of two teams working against each other in Power Struggle. From the reviews it is easy to see why this one is currently ranking so high.
