subject: Tips To Sleep Less And Stay Alert And Awake [print this page]

Getting a good night's sleep is not that easy these days. There are times when we can't just get eight solid and consistent hours of sleep. There are also certain circumstances when we simply choose to sleep less and spend our precious hours working, studying, doing responsibilities, playing and having fun.

Of course, trying to stay alert, awake and energized when you've had less sleep, when you're sleep deprived and when you're feeling tired pose a challenge. But you don't want to go to work looking and moving like a zombie. You don't want to take a nap longer than your baby does. You certainly want to watch that new movie from start to finish. And you want to play your game and lead your team to victory. So what should you do?

It is important for you to know how to sleep less and stay awake and alert so you'll be productive, remain healthy and prevent accidents and mishaps. Here are some tips to help you keep your engine running despite having less sleep:

1. One great way to start the day is by taking a cold shower. If you're clean and fresh, you'll feel light and alert. Splashing cold water on your face can help you stay awake too.

2. Strong scents can boost your alertness levels. Aromatherapy or essential oils of rosemary, eucalyptus, peppermint and coffee stimulate the brain and help reduce tiredness. Open a bottle of an essential oil or take out your lotion with the same scent when you're feeling sleepy.

3. Try acupressure. To improve circulation and get rid of tiredness and sleepiness, lightly tap the top of your head and massage the back of your neck, hands, earlobes and knees.

4. Expose yourself to natural light. Step outside and enjoy the sunlight or open your windows for a minute to let the natural light in so you'll feel more awake and alert. If you can't go outside, turn on the bright lights in your room or put a lamp to brighten your workspace.

5. Another simple way on how to sleep less and stay alert and awake during the day is by taking a power nap. Napping for 15 to 20 minutes after drinking a cup of coffee or any caffeinated drink can increase your alertness. Make sure you just keep your nap that short. When you wake up, you'll feel amazingly fresh and energized.

6. Avoid big meals. Instead of eating large and heavy meals, just munch on snacks all day. Apples, sunflower seeds and raisins can perk you up in a healthy way.

7. Do a physical activity for 2 to 3 minutes. Stretch your muscles, jog in place, walk around or jump every 30 minutes to keep your blood flowing.

8. If you're feeling sleepy, stand up and walk. Stay on your feet for a while then sit down on an uncomfortable chair. Don't allow your head to rest on your hands or desk. Find something stimulating that can wake your sleepyhead.

9. Spend time with other people to stay alert, awake and busy. Chat with your classmates, brainstorm with your co-workers, or do an activity with your neighbors.

10. Start something new and focus on it. This not only stirs excitement, it also keeps your mind alert and preoccupied.
