subject: The Body Lift; A Response To A Troubling Crisis [print this page]

A Body lift is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin from most of the body as well as tightens skin around multiple areas of the body. Most surgeons break the surgical task into an upper, and a lower, body lift. A lower body lift removes the sagging skin on the back, abdomen, buttocks and thighs while the upper body procedure removes loose skin from the arms, breasts and chest. This procedure was created to help combat obesity. Obesity is becoming a serious epidemic all around the world; this article will discuss this aspect of the body lift briefly.

In response to a serious obesity crisis, scientist and cosmetic surgeons have devised a handful of obesity treatment surgery, including gastric bypass, stomach stapling, lap banding, stomach reduction and other techniques that reduce the amount of food a person can digest. Food-restriction operations to the stomach have many side effects. One side effect that is very bothersome and visible is the loose, hanging skin that covers much of a successful weight loss patient's body. This excess skin shows because hundreds of pounds have stretched the patients skin to the maximum. The skin has lost its elasticity and the ability to spring back. Instead, the slimmed patient must deal with so much extra hanging skin, he or she can actually stumble on overhanging skin, the large apron of skin hanging from the stomach that can cover the pubis and groin areas. Notably, many extra inches of excess skin hang from the upper arms, the chest, the stomach, the upper thighs and buttocks.

Most people who have lost massive amounts of weight complain about the difficulty of getting their arms into sleeves and their excess stomach skin tucked into clothing. The extra rolls and sheets of skin rub against each other, creating many spots of irritation and leading to hygienic difficulties. Many say that sitting on the loose skin is similar to sitting on Jell-O. The masses of excess skin also make any form of exercise difficult. Most women in this state and condition require a mastopexy, or breast lift, often in conjunction with breast implants. Men who have body shaping surgery usually undergo male breast reduction surgery to remove the excess skin hanging from their chests.

While the procedure is expensive, often running in the neighborhood of $20,000-50,000 for an entire body, it usually leaves long, visible scars on the arms, chest, stomach and legs. Most plastic surgeons break the task into multiple parts opting to perform a lower body life followed with an upper body lift. While this surgery leaves dramatic scars, this surgery is the only hope for those who have lost extreme amounts of weight and would like a chance at living life with normal body mass and skin that would not interfere with this lifestyle.
