subject: Workplace Violence - Common Signs That Should Not Be Overlooked and My Solution [print this page]

One thing for sure is that work place violence is on the rise. The co-workers' rage has set in and have made the final decision to take action in their own hands and murder/suicide seems to be the answers. Not only take others lives as well as his/hers life. Job loss, bad economy, and lay offs are situations that make the people have a certain amount of emotions some including anger, frustration, and in some cases rage.

Situation: The Clique

There are people that make it nearly impossible to have a positive attitude because they are determined to be negative.

Have you ever worked with someone that continually said negative things about everyone that they worked with except those few that they choose to be in their clique. Unknowingly, the person being made fun of (harassment) has created anger. A few months of continual abuse will create a higher level of anger, eventually could overflow into a physical contact. So the person that has been harassed, that has taken all that they can take, because they initiated the physical contact will now be terminated.

Question: Why was the Supervisor not involved before the situation got this far? The reason some co-workers will not report because to many people involved in the clique and it is better to be part of the in crowd than be in the out crowd.

Situation: The Bully

The bully can make life at work very unbearable for those working around him/her. This person uses this supposed power over those that shows fear. Usually picks on smaller/weaker people. Those that will not report the harassment to the supervisor. This person is very good at covering their tracks and knowing when to show their assumed power. Problem begins when he/she feels that they are loosing the power. And others show no respect for them or begin to ignore them all altogether. Supervisors again have to keep a watchful eye on them for behavioral changes. It is important that co-workers report all incidents of bullying.

Situation: Co-workers with mental disorders

The co-workers with known mental disorders have to be handled with care so to speak. People with mental illness is more common at the work place. I have had a couple of co-workers tell me if they were on medication for mental illness. So this is more common place today than it was years ago. This makes the jobs of the managers more challenging. I believe when co-workers know, more patience and less stress is on the worksite. But when if something goes array, things must be handled quickly and with care.

Situation: Termination of Employment

This is the one thing that certainly brings out emotion in anyone who is dependent on their job to support their family. With the unemployment at a high percent, everyone needs the job that they have. Even if they have done something that warrants the loss of their job, this employed person will be emotional. Depending on how it is handled by the manager/human resources department will greatly depend on how the person will react to this situation.

The management team must be trained on how to handle these type of difficult situations. It is almost imperative that companies spend money on this training, because this could actually determine the outcome of positive versus a deadly situation. Make those training courses mandatory for all supervisors for all companies. Companies must have a zero tolerance for any type of physical contact between co-workers, and reporting classes for all hourly employees.

Spending 14 years at my last job, I have seen several situations that were handled quickly and effectively. Work place violence is on the rise and shows no sign of slowing. These are just a few of the things that you need to be aware of that exists.
