subject: Hit In The Head, Got Strange Symptoms? You Want to Read This [print this page] My son, Emilio, a Sophomore, is an awesome football player, as you can see I am a proud mom. This year he made the Varsity Football Team at the center position. First time he has ever played this position. He got hit during a drill during a scrimmage at the high school.
He said that his hands trembled for a few minutes, but he "shook it off" and continued with the game. He was there to play and was not going to let the team down. He knew he had to perfect the moves and the plays before the season begins. He did not tell his coach or his teammates. You know people are in the stands and he just wanted them to see how much those practices had paid off by the teams performance.
This hit was not one of the hardest hits that he has ever taken. He has hit others harder than he was hit, so he just figured that this was nothing to worry about. Why bother anyone with the trembling hands, and besides they stopped trembling, everything back to normal, right?
After the scrimmage, he came home took his shower and said that he was going to lay down for awhile. He got up a few hours up and continued with his chores: mowing and trimming the lawn. Finished his chores, took his shower and started his homework.
Dinner time was he ate his sub sandwich, chips, and drank a Gatorade, then within an hour he started feeling sick. He complained with a headache, saying not for me to worry it was from "getting the clocked cleaned by the lineman" and an upset stomach. Sunday, the same symptoms. Very irritable with his homework, not like him at all.
Monday he went to school, this is when everything went wrong. He started loosing his balance, slurred speech, could not focus on teachers and repeated his self often. Teacher referred him to the nurses station. The nurse did the initial checks and thought that he might have a concussion. Suggested that he go to the Emergency Room.
The doctor told us that the things that parents need to look out for are:
Can not remember things that happened right before or right after the blow.
Vision is blurry, pupils often not the same size
Very unstable during walking, appears to be clumsy
Speaks slowly, repeats self, not the child's normal self
Any loss of consciousness is something that needs to be addressed quickly
Multiple concussions are dangerous
States have laws now to protect players that have had head concussions to prevent them from returning to the fields/courts to soon
After receiving the CT Scan the doctor told us that he did not see any swelling or blood around the brain. But told him that he could not participate in any physical activities for 2 weeks. And he was very firm that he was not to return to the field until he was released by his regular doctor. He was prescribed Tylenol. Emilio did not return back to school until Thursday, due to the headaches and upset stomach.
Our kids love the contact sports and we love to watch them play, but lets not forget to watch them afterward for any of the above signs of possible head trauma. I certainly did not realize all of the signs that I was advised about. Hopefully this will make someone more aware!
