A large number of car accidents are caused by common situations which can be avoided if more drivers are aware of the common causes. Texas Hyundai wants to keep you safe on the road, and offers the following tips for reducing your risk for a car accident while driving:

Avoid Tailgating

Riding too close to the car in front of you is a recipe for disaster! If the car in front of you needs to slam on their breaks for any reason, you have less time to react and chances are good that you will not come to a stop until your front bumper is smashed into their rear bumper. Try to keep the distance of one car length for every ten miles an hour you are traveling between you and the car in front of you. If you're traveling 50 mph, try to stay about 5 car lengths behind to give yourself time to stop if necessary.

Avoid Speeding

Another very common cause of car accidents is driving too fast. When you are driving faster than the speed limit, you're at risk for getting into an accident. Speed limits are designed with the condition of the road and the environment in mind. Driving through a residential area will have a lower speed limit to make it possible for cars to stop should a child run out in front of the car, for example. Your reaction time is slower when the car is moving faster, and if you lose control of a speeding vehicle the result can be deadly for you or others in your way.

Adjust Driving Based on Conditions

Just because the speed limit says you can drive 55 miles per hour doesn't always mean it's safe to do so! If it's raining, snowing, or there is poor visibility, you should adjust your speed accordingly.
