subject: The Apple Ipad, What Is So Good And So Bad About Them? [print this page]

Apple released the iPad in April 2010 and within a span of three months, this tablet computer has sold a record 3 million devices. Weighing about 700 grams, it has comfortably taken the position between the smartphones and a laptop. Here is a quick run down of the advantages and disadvantages of the product in case you are thinking of getting one for yourself.

Advantages

Size

The iPad is half an inch thick, 10x8, 9.7 inch screen and weighs only 1.5 pounds which will fit perfectly in a small bag for when you are on the move. This is smaller than a laptop but larger than a phone, so it will not fit in your pockets, unless you have large pockets of course.

Applications

Those of you who own an iPhone know how important the Apps can be and there have been thousands of new Apps made specifically for the iPad which whilst can entertain you can also help you to run your life more smoothly. Magazines, Newspapers and games are now all available in a way that you have never experienced before.

Of course, most of the Apps from the iPhone and iPod touch will work as well.

Battery

One of the biggest complaints about the iPhone is the battery life which can exceptional drop if you are using the phone too much, well, Apple have listened to this as the iPad can play multimedia non stop for approximately 10 hours, this is better than some laptops

iBooks

A new feature that was launched at the same time and pretty much made specifically for the iPad was iBooks. There to compete with Amazons Kindle, iBooks allows you to purchase books and read them straight off your iPad. Think of it as iTunes but for reading material. A whole library, carried around in your bag.

Disadvantages

Whilst it might be taking over the world, there are some disadvantages to the iPad which would be worth knowing before you buy.

Flash

Like the iPhone Apple has restricted the use of Flash on the iPad claiming that it will cause crashing and that websites should use HTML5 instead. Whilst Flash may have bugs, there are a lot of websites on the internet that are now restricted to iPad users.

Price

As with a lot of Apples products the price can sometimes be very high and can hit the wallet hard. Remember though that iPad is still very new and the price will come down. Currently the WIFI only 16GB version in the UK will cost 429 but they can go up to nearly 700 with more size and 3G capabilities added on.

Compare to a laptop

Because of its size, many people are comparing the iPad to a laptop and therefore comparing its functionality to those of a laptop. Things like a keyboard, printer ports or USB ports are missing from the iPad, but remember, this was designed for a totally different use. The iPad is to be used for entertainment purposes, not so you can carry your office on the train.

The iPad is set to take the world by storm, and like the iPhone and iPod before them could totally revolutionise the lives of their owners. The world will be split into those who love them and those who refuse to buy them out of principle. The main question is, which one are you going to be?
