subject: The Purpose Of Alcohol Detox Programmes [print this page]

Alcohol detox programmes are designed to cleanse the body, removing the toxic sunstance that is alcohol. An added advantage is that medical studies have revealed that with alcohol no longer being in the body, the addict is rid of his previous desire to drink. With that desire gone, the he now has a chance of a future. It can sometimes be taken lightly but alcohol addiction is life-threatening. This is why medical supervision is necessary; to ensure as much as feasible that the programme has been a successful one.

Being treated in a professional facility with trained staff to guide you on your treatment programme provides the best chance of long-term success. Especially to those with a severe and long-term addiction.

It will be the case for some that their level of alcohol abuse was not of the extent that serious detox reaction will occur. However, that doesn't mean that they won't experience symptoms and, in fact, almost certainly will. Such symptoms as severe headaches, insomnia and restlessness, an aversion to food, nausea and vomiting and sweating or chills.

Unfortunately, for those who have undergone periods of excessive amounts of alcohol, there may be further effects afoot. Here. We're looking here at symptoms such as seizures, tactile hallucinations and convulsions. This illustrates how tough detox can potentially be and why it is so important that it be carried out with the proper medical supervision. There have been a growing number of substance users but fortunately to meet that negative statistic is the increasing amount of alcohol detox programmes worldwide. This makes it easier for a patient or his confidant to locate a nearby treatment centre.

Some addicts will feel the need to justify every time they drink and have a long list of excuses prepared should someone close to them even bring up the subject of rehab. However, should they realise that something needs to be done and decide to tackle their issue alone, they will likely find that ultimately, rehab is their only option.
