subject: Fundamentals Of Fish Ponds [print this page]

"If you are planning to make a fish pond, it would be better if you know the basics of how to take care of one before realizing your plans.

It's better to have a fish pond that is at least fifty inches deep especially if you reside in a place where the temperature is cold. Doing this, your fishes can stay at the bottom of the pond to protect themselves from the unfavorable weather conditions. Buy a device called a de-icer which would serve as a heater of your fish pond. You can also provide a plastic cover with small holes for air to enter to make the fish pond warm during winter.

Also, don't forget to get a filter for your pond. This way, you are sure that the water in the pond is clean. You can find many pond filters in the market. If you want to be more eco friendly, buy a solar powered pond filter. After doing this, the next task is to check your filter regularly. Change the filter as often as needed, this actually depends on the size of your pond or how many fish inside the pond and of course the weather conditions.

Buy a net to cover your pond if it is situated near trees and plants. This will serve as a protection of the pond so that no debris from trees would fall in to it.

You also need to know how and what to feed your fish. Remember that their appetite is different from us. Avoid feeding biscuits, rice and bread to your fish. Buy from your local pet shop.

Water pollution is one perpetrator that can cause health complications to fish. For this reason, it is important to make sure sure that what you place in the pond will not cause pollution. If you have other pets at home like cats and dogs, make sure that they do not throw stuff in the water or urinate in it.
