subject: Why You Should Consider Water Exercise [print this page]

We all know that it is important for us to exercise to maintain our health and now you have more options when it comes to physical activity than ever before. Water aerobics is one of the fastest growing activities for working out and staying in shape. There are several reasons that this type of fitness workout can be a good fit for individuals that may not be able to participate in other types of exercise.

The water offers increased resistance allowing a person to get added benefit from their movements that they would not get from working out in a studio. Performing the movements in the water as opposed to being out of the water will allow you to burn more calories. Water aerobics exercise can eliminate upwards of 600 calories in a 60 minute workout.

A workout in the water can be therapeutic and relaxing (as much as exercising will allow). The water can be soothing and is buoyant allowing your limbs to feel lighter than the actual are. After a long day at work, there is nothing that feels better than feeling lighter than you actually are. This property makes it easy to exercise in the deep end using special flotation devices designed for aqua exercise.

One of the biggest benefits to exercising in the pool is the fact that it is kind to your joints as well as many other parts of your body that may be injured or have pain. Many rehabilitation facilities have pools that are warmer than normal just so that individuals with arthritis are able to exercise with little or no pain. A water workout is a good place for an obese person to begin an exercise program. Many people that have been overweight for several years often have joint problems, for obvious reasons. Being in the water alleviates some of the stress that is put on joints due to the excess weight.

My experience with aqua aerobics classes is that they are fun. These classes usually have music playing that just makes you feel like moving and the class is filled with a cross section of all types of people that make for social interaction among individuals with a common goal. The atmosphere of a class can often be the one thing that keeps a person coming back regularly.

It is a well known fact that exercise is essential to your well being. Having a variety of exercise workouts can help eliminate the boredom of a repetitive exercise program. If you are looking for something new or some added variety in your exercise program, why not consider water exercise.
