Well, there aren't many people that will dispute that creating good quality backlinks is one of the most important things to do to make sure that happens.

1) Write Articles
Submitting articles is a great way to get good backlinks because if you submit an article to a top article directory with a high pagerank like squidoo or ezinearticles, your article will not only inherit their high page rank, but you will also have an opportunity to leave a good quality backlink to one of your other articles!
Now, listen up. Normally I would never tell anyone to submit an article to more than one article directory, but if you are writing an article just to get good backlinks, and the only reason you are writing the article is so you can slip in a link to one of your other articles, then by all means submit that article to as many directories as you can!
Now, this might seem a bit 'spammy' to you but it's not and here's why. Article directories love receiving quality content. The fact that you submit the same article to another directory does not detract from this! If you are going to use this method I HIGHLY recommend a service called distributeyourarticles. Search for them on google and check them out! they will submit your article to thousands of directories at very reasonable cost. You can always expect to get good backlinks every time you submit an article. They're great!
2) Social Bookmarking
Another great way to get good backlinks is to post your article's url on social bookmarking sites. A word of warning though. Contrary to what many internet marketers seem to think, the purpose of social bookmarking sites is NOT for internet markters to take advantage so they can get good backlinks.
If you spam, do not be surprised if you are banned immediately without warning! By spam I mean, don't just paste a url that goes straight to a mindless sales pitch page. Post urls that lead to articles that have informative content. Also, when posting you url, try to use linking text that has relevant keywords to keywords targeted on the page which you are linking to!
Now, as far as automation services go for social bookmarking, I have not come across any services that have impressed me with their ability to get good backlinks, at least not any of the ones you have to pay for! However, there is one site, socialposter.com that has semi automated the process and made things a lot things easier. Plus it's free so I highly recommend it.
Well there you have it - ofcourse there are other ways to get good back links, but writing articles and social bookmarking are by far the most effective in my opinion and seeing as it can be such a time-consuming process to get good back links, (again in my opinion) I try not to worry too much about wasting time on methods where I'm not guaranteed to get good backlinks.
