subject: Wheat Free Cake Substitutes [print this page]

Candida is a form of yeast fungi which is found in the normal intestinal flora, but can cause serious infections, if over growth happens. When an abnormal growth of Candida occurs in the digestive tract, the vagina or the mouth, discomfort will occur, and other more serious symptoms of yeast infection will follow.

In such instances, a yeast free diet is recommended. Yeast is present in different foods, particularly those that are commercially processed. Some foods that have high content of yeast include certain cheeses, buttermilk, and other dairy products. Wheat is also avoided in a yeast free diet, so wheat substitutes should be used instead when baking bread, cakes and other products.

When a cake recipe calls for wheat, you can use other wheat substitutes which will give the same nutritional benefits, and are even more superior to wheat in many ways. For instance, millet can be used to bake a wheat free cake, because it can even provide protein and silica, which the body needs. It very rarely causes food allergies, and has a distinct taste to it, as well.

Other kinds of flour that you could use for a wheat free cake are sorghum flour and flour coming from the Amaranth grain. Sorghum is similar to millet in texture, while amaranth is considered a good source of calcium. Amaranth is common flour used in Mexico and has been used in the past to fight malnutrition.

Aside from using only wheat-free flour, a good diet that can discourage the over growth of the Candida yeast fungi, should also eliminate other types of flour such as cake, self-rising, durum, graham, semolina and even whole meal flour.

As many people realize that using wheat flour for baking cakes can trigger food allergies and can encourage the growth of the Candida yeast fungi, the popularity of using wheat flour substitutes is catching on. Thus, it is not really that difficult to find non-wheat grains in the supermarket, although they are more often found in Asian stores and even online specialty stores.

Wheat flour substitutes can also prevent allergies caused by gluten. There are people who have intolerance to gluten, which if found present in their foods can cause irritable bowel syndrome, digestive problems, bloating, and flatulence. For older people who have this intolerance, more severe symptoms may occur that can create damage to the body's internal organs.

Using wheat substitutes is just one way to create a yeast free diet. Sugar rich foods should also be avoided, as sugar feeds the growth of yeast. Making a conscious effort to change your diet can have positive results and can protect your body from the effects of a yeast infection.
