Debt is a reality facing many of us these days. Bills pile up, jobs are scarce, benefits and retirement programs are being cut, and it's harder than ever to get a loan. Even those that qualify for loans are being turned away because of the risks banks foresee in this kind of financial climate.

Whether you need money for college, to finance your home, buy a car, or just to get by, debt will likely be a quick means to a short term end. It's difficult to plan for the long term and easy to put worries behind us and pay things off further down the road. But when you come to that road, you may end up in worse shape than you had envisioned.

According to new findings by the Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS), it is men who are in need of debt management advice most these days. "The CCCS reports a 51 % increase in the number of men seeking debt advice since 2007."

While men earn on average more money than women, it appears men are less able to repay their debts than are women. It's wired into men's brains that they are the breadwinners, bearing the brunt of the responsibility to provide for their families. Perhaps this could explain the disproportionate number of men in financial trouble.

Whether man or woman, debt consolidation may be the best way for those in trouble to get back their financial footing. Here are a few things it can do:

- Through credit counseling agencies you can create a customizable debt management plan

- Consolidate all your outstanding bills into one manageable monthly payment that is usually lower than if you had paid them individually

- Work with companies that provide debt settlement leads, helping lower your outstanding balance

Debt can take a pretty heavy toll on our lives. If you think you may need help, consider getting into contact with a professional. It may help to address things now rather than later.
