When bodybuilding, it's very important that you pay attention, and make an effort workout the entire body. Don't do what loads of others do, in only training the upper body, you really should workout your entire body if you wish to receive the best results possible.

I've had many years of experience of weight training, and fitness training, and in those years, the most beneficial exercises I've found to beef up the shoulders and chest would be the flat bench press and inclined the bench press exercise for your chest, shrugs to work the trap, dumbbell flyes and the military press.

When possible, make an attempt to avoid weight training using machines, as the machine restricts your natural movement, isolating that specific muscle, so whilst you may be working that muscle, you're no longer working the muscles which hook up with and support it, therefore not gaining the best results out of your effort, and this may also result in injury.

Other exercises I would recommend for the people wishing to weight lift include the pull downs, military press, squats, bicep curls, dead lifts, and tricep pull downs. When making use of weights, I strongly advise, where possible, that you try and isolate either side. By this, by way of example, if you are performing bicep curls, instead of using the bar and performing a barbell curl, curling with both arms simultaneously, do them individually, so grab a dumbbell and perform dumbbell curls, working each arm individually. The reason behind this is that more often than not, when really straining, whichever side you're more at ease with will take a lot of the strain, training harder, and so getting better results. For example, I'm right handed, therefore if I perform barbell curls, when the going gets tough, usually I'll notice my right arm taking 75% of the strain, pushing the load much more than the left, as this is the arm I'm most comfortable with using.

These are just a few of the exercises I recommend, there are many more, but I however wish to state that when strength training, please take additional care, as it's very easy to injure yourself. Take some time when performing the exercises, don't rush, because this is amongst the most frequent ways folks get injured.
