subject: Debt Management Tips – How To Deal With The Recession And Manage Debt [print this page] Recession - a word almost all of us will know personally. The recession caused a great deal of trouble in 2009, and it looks like it is going to do the same for some (if not all) of 2010 - even if the recession is officially finished!
So, to make sure you are prepared to fight your battle against the recession what should you do this year?
Improve your debt management skills
If there's anything the recession taught us - it's how to deal with debt (or in some people's cases - mine in particular - how not to deal with debt).
Basically, by improving your debt management skills, you should be able to improve your ability to repay your debt in the shortest possible timeframe (that's if you're in debt now, or fall into debt over the course of the year).
Whether that means learning how to manage your money more effectively in general, or cutting back on non-essential expenses to free up money you would like to use to repay your debts - improving your debt management skills is definitely something you should consider doing in 2010.
Save money
Another thing you should consider doing this year is saving money. Just like improving your debt management skills, saving money will help you tackle any debt you have/come up against.
By making regular contributions to a savings account, not only are you providing yourself with a nice financial 'cushion', but you are also covering your back in case any unexpected costs occur that you can't afford to pay out of your salary.
Think twice before you buy
When you are doing your shopping this year, think twice before you buy anything. That means instead of just throwing things into the trolley/basket when in the supermarket, have a think about whether you really need this item.
This will tie in nicely to point one - improve your debt management skills - because if you cut back on your non-essential expenditure, you will have more money available to pay towards any debts you have/come up against throughout the course of 2010.
So, there you have it. You don't have to do the things listed here, but there's a good possibility that your situation will improve if you do. Here's to a good 2010!
