New Brunswick Cottages and Hotels-Bathurst and Surrounding

The original name of Bathurst was Nepisiguit. Then it was changed to St. Peters. Finally it was changed by a town official to honor the Earl of Bathurst in 1826. Bathurst became a real city in 1966. One famous citizen was Nicolas Denys who wrote about 17th century life on the Acadian Peninsula. He lived and worked from 1598 until 1688 completing many history books along the way. Denys said that his home of Bathurst was the coldest and snowiest place that he had ever lived on earth.

Manawagonish means place for clams. Manawagonish Island is said to translate into island at the salt marsh. The island is now a bird sanctuary near the Irving National Park in West Saint John.

Kingsclear takes it name from a the practice of the king allowing that certain trees be cut in certain areas. The permit was called a king's clear. At one time clearcutting was not allowed after the British Parliament passed a law banning the cutting of white pine trees in the King's woods. Land grants in New Brunswick were even granted with this stipulation. This stipulation helped to preserve the forests and greenery that abounds in this area as well as throughout the rest of Canada.

Vacationing in this area is best for nature lovers or those looking to slow down their day to day pace. Ask your travel agent for a list of places to camp or stay as well as information about all available activities that take place in the area.
