subject: Types Of Ocd And Their Presenting Features [print this page]

Based on researches, there are recorded five main types of OCD. The classification of each type is based on the sufferer's presented symptom. It is important to know, however, that these types of OCD are not limited and an individual may experience a combination of the proposed symptoms. To understand behaviors of persons afflicted with this anxiety disorder, let us get to know the sufferers better.

OCD on Contamination/Washing Sufferers under this type are generally grouped into two into two: those sufferers who have obsessions associated to contamination with the absence of fear of harming one self (and others) and those sufferers who have obsessions associated to contamination with the presence of fear of harming one self (and others) as a result of contamination. Individuals diagnosed under this type are observed to do hand washing, bathing, and cleaning surfaces and things a number of times a day.

Checkers These OCD sufferers are bound to continually check locks and switches of their houses or working place to make sure they are closed and turned off, respectively. They are being eaten by their unreasonable dread that failing to lock or switch something off will result to harming ones self and others; checkers frequently have visions in mind of frightening disaster taking place in which they're to blame if they do not give in to their impulses of checking and rechecking.

Orderers: OCD individuals who have obsessions associated with symmetry and order. Those who belong to this subtype have compulsions on arranging things at the right place, at the right way, at a particular angle. They are often mistaken as perfectionists as they would always want their stuffs prearranged before they begin day to day activities. Orderers always feel stressed and anxious if their things are moved or rearranged.

Hoarders Hoarding seems to be one of the ill dreadful forms of OCD. People affected by this type of OCD have difficulties in discarding objects that seem to have no value. Hoarders keep on collecting things like matchboxes, candy wrappers, and cans. They keep on keeping these items in the false view of truly needing them. This resulted in a chaotic environment not only stressful to the sufferer but also to the people around them.

Primary Obsessional OCD Common themes of experienced obsessions under this type include violence, sex, and religion. Although obvious compulsions are not usually manifested, sufferers are still bound to do mental rituals like constant counting, praying, and uttering words. Individuals diagnosed to have this type of OCD respond better to given medications and sessions on exposure and response prevention.
