subject: Essential Warehouse Supplies Safety Products [print this page]

Among all the warehouse supplies that any company may need, some of them, the safety products, are among the most indispensable. They need to meet or exceed OSHA safety compliance regulations. This includes safety products themselves and any equipment that may pose any kind of safety hazard whatsoever.

LPG gas is indispensable in most industrial and warehouse settings. As long as it is stored and used wisely, it is safe, but because of the potential dangers inherent in LPG, it is imperative that it is stored safely. For outdoor storage, it must also be theft proof. Aluminum mesh cylinder lockers ensure safety and security. Inside the warehouse or factory, gas cylinders should be securely held in place against the wall using stationary cylinder holders.

Special double-welded, orange enamel painted cylinder pallets have been designed for transporting cylinders with a forklift. These are ideal for both storage and handling of LPG cylinders in quantities of up to eight at a time. While the cylinders are held firmly in place in the specially designed pallet, they are also easily accessible from either side.

No matter how many precautions you take against the possibility of fire, fires can occur. It would be foolhardy, not to mention illegal, not to have highly visible, easily and quickly accessible fire extinguishers located in strategic positions throughout your warehouse. The best type of fire extinguishers are those that contain multi-purpose mono-ammonium phosphate.

Emergency lights are essential warehouse supplies. In an emergency, the power is often the first thing to go. Emergency lights are designed to go on when the power goes out. They alert staff and act as a guide to the exits. Because their heavy-duty batteries automatically recharge every 24 hours, they can be counted on to work when they are needed.

Exit signs, fire extinguisher signs and other emergency signage must be clearly visible even in poor light conditions. The ideal emergency sign will be a glow in the dark sign that remains clearly visible for up to 8 hours even in a completely darkened room. It will be self-activating and recharge itself without the need for an external power source.

Protective work gear is another must in the warehouse. Hard hats, protective gloves and particle and mist face masks are just a few things that should be available in any warehouse. Depending on the types of materials handling requirements in the warehouse, your warehouse supplies representative may suggest other types of protective clothing as well.

Aside from these and other safety products, all warehouse supplies must comply with OSHA safety requirements. The protective wire cage on a forklift, for example, is required by law for a reason: it saves lives. While OSHA safety standards are very high, many of the better equipment actually exceeds OSHA requirements and it is advisable to choose these products whenever possible.

When you add it all up, complying with OSHA standards and ensuring the utmost safety in the workplace is a big job. Fortunately, a good warehouse supplies company knows all the regulations and can help the warehouse manager or owner choose the right safety equipment and clothing for their work environment.
