subject: Car Games That Revolutionized The Whole Genre [print this page]

For all the people who are now past their teenage years, video games are things that we have lived and grown up with. Most of the classic Video Games were create in front of our eyes and every single one of them shared an experience that is indefinable. First it used to be Atari and arcades with games like Pole position, Outrun and Test drive but in the 90s, the graphics and game play suddenly increasingly enhanced. Years passed and eventually we were able to buy a real car from some New Jersey Chevrolet dealer. Yet, that car from NJ Chevy dealer couldn't match up to the fun we had with our joysticks.

There are infinite numbers of auto-driving games up till now, but there are only some which left a mark on our memories and literally revolutionized the whole typical racing game experience. It is undeniable that the 80s and early 90s games are still the true pioneers that ignited it all but this article discusses games that were released after the mid 90s and added gear to the whole driving experience. Let us have a look at four famous games that didn't just rely on ordinary racing strategy, but made gaming even more exciting.

Need For Speed

Easily said, this is the legend that started it all. In the mid 90s, when everyone was happy with arcade games, Need for Speed showed us that it's not all about driving on the track and winning the race. gamers had the option to choose from real locations and cars and also to reveal more tracks and cars as the game progressed. It seemed like for the first time the gaming industry had seriously shaken hands with with automobile giants for such a product.

Grand Theft Auto

A game which was not truly a driving game because the player was able to get out of the vehicle and play wth other things in the city. That is what made it a legend. The first game, although not very hi-fi regarding graphics and the cinematics, completely set new limits for a driving game. The game play was more interactive than ever and the gamer was able to stop the car even during a mission, get out of the vehicle, steal some other vehicle and carry on with the mission. This gave any gamer the freedom needed to make games more exciting.

Gran Turismo

When this game was released in 1997, there was hardly any driving/racing game which was able to meet its high end graphics. Moreoevr, it had a big collection of cars and numerous customization options which could alter the performance of the vehicle. The handling was also very smooth and real in comparision to other games of that time

Driver

There is definitely no car driving/racing list complete without this legendary mention. Released in 1999, this series told us what the next generation automobile games were about to be like. There was a strong story line, characters and explorable locations in the game. Overall, it was an exhilarating experience for any gamer.
