Palermo has a very rich civilization and has seen the rule of people from different cultures. Arabs took the city over from the Byzantine Empire and it was during that time when Palermo saw a lot of development. The standards of living were raised as the city became a trading hub.

Adding up to the beauty of the city was the addition of beautiful mosques and glorious gardens. Normans overtook the rule from the Arabs and the city was given much independence in all regards of life. Normans also built many architectural signs of their culture and some of those still stand today. Following the rule of the Normans, Palermo went under the rule of French, Swabians and then the Spaniards. Afterwards Palermo came under the Spanish rule and then went under the rule of Kingdom of Naples. It was the Italian liberator Garibaldi who eventually made Palermo a part of Italy while uniting the Kingdom of Italy. Palermo was the ruling centre of Sicily and gained much industrial growth during this period of time. Economic conditions were made better and the city also expanded. However the city's development were badly hurt due to the harms done to it by the World War II. Today in the 21st century Palermo is still an important trading centre and urban development is constantly improving its conditions and damages that were caused by the Italian Mafia to the city.
