subject: Reasons For Using Computer Aided Design (cad) Technology [print this page]

CAD or computer-aided design is computer technology which can benefit any design orientated industry. Whether the design of objects is real or virtual, CAD programs will make the lives of those who design much easier. CAD has been used in the creation of computer generated animation for special effects in movies and advertising and with the ability to render designs in two and three dimensions; this technology is perfect for drafting of engineering, technical, architectural and industrial drawings. CAD technology is a valuable tool in the automotive, shipbuilding and aerospace industries.

The different CAD programs are as numerous as their applications. This means that there will be a CAD program that will fit the needs and budget of the buyer. There are some programs that are designed with a specific purpose or industry in mind such as those used in the designing of houses or for the design of complex machinery or large industrial structures. Other programs have a more general function.

Although no special hardware is required for most CAD packages in order to run the program effectively a good graphics card, high speed CPU and large amounts of RAM are important. And of course the most important component of the success of CAD is the user and the patience it will take to master new software.

CAD software comes in 2D drafting systems or 3D modelers. The 2D program is for those who need to create simple diagrams, plan layouts, cutting patterns or design shop details. It allows the user to do a line by line drawing (as you would on a drawing board) on the screen. The obvious advantage of the program over manual drawing is its speed, consistency and the neatness of the finish. The 3D programs allow users to illustrate their designs or ideas more clearly by producing renderings and animations to a computer model. The program allows the model to be rotated and viewed from any angle, including for the inside looking out.

CAD has fast become a valuable tool in computer aided technology. The efficiency of being able to layout and develop designs on screen and then print or save it has saved designers valuable time.
