Step one. Defragment your hard disk drive

There is a program in the accessories found on Microsoft windows to defragment the hard drive. It organizes the files, enhancing the speed of file retrieval on your system. Step two. Turn off programs you're not utilizing.

Over time as you accumulate programs and do not use them anymore then it would be best to remove these programs as they use up the memory of your system when they load at start up and use disk space.

Step three. Run the disk scan.

Running the disk scan can check on errors on your disk drive. To execute this click on my computer and right mouse click on the hard disk drive that you would like to check. After that click on properties, tools then click on error checking. This will check for errors and help fix a slow running computer.

Step four: Turn off desktop animation.

It would be wise to shut off desktop animation as this utilizes a lot of memory. On Windows XP turn it off by right clicking on my computer choose properties, advanced tab and settings in the performance section. On the Dialogue box click on visual effects tab then click on the option to adjust for best performance. If you're running Vista click on start, and then click on control panel, system and maintenance, and performance information and tools then choose adjust for best performance to help speed up a slow running computer.

Step five: Run a system and registry scan

A registry is in every computer that has windows. Adding and removing program files can leave partial files and maybe corrupted files in the registry.
