Located 20 minutes from Durban International Airport and next to Gateway Shopping Centre and Umhalanga's beaches, the Royal Palm is ideally situated for business and leisure travellers.
After a scenic drive three hours north of Durban we arrived at Ghost Mountain Inn in Mkuze, northern KwaZulu Natal. This intimate hotel is a perfect base to explore the nearby wildlife and coastal reserves. We experienced Big Five game drives, horse-riding, a boat cruise on Lake Jozini and a cultural village experience. The Inn has a swimming pool which overlooks the gardens and mountain. For relaxation and pampering there is a Spa which offers a range of treatments.
Next stop was Thonga Beach Lodge, set above a secluded bay on the shores of the Maputuland coast. The lodge is surrounded by dunes and shady trees and has 24 thatched chalets, all built on different levels with wooden steps up to each, the chalets are well spaced and retain their privacy. The swimming pool is located on a wooden deck and the golden-sand beach a short walk from the lodge. Guests can partake in a range of activities including kayaking on Lake Sibaya, cultural village tours, snorkelling, sundowners at Lake Sibaya, superb scuba diving and turtle tracking in season. There is a curio shop and Spa for guests at the Lodge. A truly perfect location for honeymooners or to simply get away from it all.
We visited the Tembe Elephant Park which offers the Big Five experience along with prolific birdlife. The lodge's rooms are designed in a tented style with a wooden deck and there is a swimming pool to cool off in. The rustic lodge has a lovely atmosphere with very friendly staff.
It was then back to Durban for a night at the 5-star Royal Hotel located in the centre of the city and a five- minute walk from the beach. An ideal base to experience all the vibrant city of Durban has to offer.
The trip ended with a tour of the luxurious Blue Train, the ultimate in 5-star rail journeys with every possible onboard luxury including butler service and gourmet food and wines.
