One of the simplest ways of disinfection is to leave stuffs out in the sunlight. There are exceptions to these however. For example, the dark coloured clothes.

Dark colours are not to be exposed under direct sunlight for too long as this can cause bleaching of colour. One may have doubts on how much good sunlight can actually do. In third-world countries, there have been experiments conducted using clear plastic soda bottles filled with contaminated drinking water. When left in the sunlight for a while, the water actually showed a reduced bacteria count. There are also swimming pool systems and some advanced municipalities using strong UV light instead of chlorine to disinfect the water.

On a sunny day, the air outside the house comes with a good dose of ultraviolet radiation from the sunlight. While ultraviolet rays are not so great for your skin, they are great as disinfectants - they kill germs. Haul a rug to a sunny spot on the driveway so that it gets several hours of strong sunlight. With something big like a mattress or an area rug, it is one of the best and cheapest ways to kill bacteria. This also means that you do not have to depend on a carpet cleaning services provider for the purpose all the time. If you have tried washing and drying these out, you will know how much of a good idea using the sun is.

Alternatively, or in addition, you can vacuum out rugs, carpets, mattresses etc. Take your time when you vacuum a carpet, especially a thick hairy carpet in which dirt is sure to be deeply embedded. Considering the health consequences from a carpet, a one time run-through of high-power vacuum hose is not always enough. It is necessary to go over each section of carpeting several times. Do not hasten - vacuum slowly to allow the suction to remove all the in-ground dust and dirt.
