subject: Lose Weight - Are Diets A Waste Of Time? [print this page]

Dieting has been around for a long time and is as popular as ever. However, what I cannot seem to work out is, if weight loss diets are so popular why are so many people getting fatter?. I soon realised that diets do not work. I am not saying that some diets will not be successful at making you lose weight. There have been diets that people have used and have successfully lost weight. The point that I am making is that diets do not work when it comes to keeping the weight off.

The reason what they are ineffective at keeping the weight off is because the way they are designed. A diet lasts for a fixed period of time and then once the diet has run its course, that is it. Even when people have successfully lost weight they soon put it back on again shortly after they have finished their diet.

When this happens most people go onto the next diet and the same results happen again and the cycle continues. Dieting becomes an addiction that is fuelled by the highs of losing weight and the lows of quickly putting it back on again. This creates the need to chase after the next fad diet in the hope that this will solve the problem.

This diet addiction is fuelled by the fear of putting on weight and it begins to control peoples behaviour. This creates negative and emotional problems that create unhealthy eating habits that range from starvation to binge eating.

People will never successfully lose weight and keep it off through dieting because it is a quick fix. Diets work in isolation and that is why the results will always be temporary. People need to realise that to successfully lose weight, keep it off and live a healthy happy life is to change their lifestyle.

Changing your lifestyle also means changing your attitude towards food. For many people this can be difficult especially if they have been on diets for a long time. The key is not to focus on food but the overall health and well being of your body and mind. Although, food and diet plays an important role in achieving that, it is only a part of the jigsaw. Changing your lifestyle means focusing on all aspects of your life, from exercise and fitness, relationships, work and spiritually.

Do not feel the pressure of losing weight by seeing one of those anorexic models. Being that thin is not natural and healthy. Focus on being healthy and make it your choice and no one elses. By doing what you want you will have a greater a chance of following through. Do not worry if you experience lapses these are normal. Just brush yourself off and keep going. Remember living a healthy lifestyle is not a destination it is a journey that you travel every day.
