subject: Depression Causes - Learning To See The Painful Truth [print this page] Answering the "why am I depressed" question is often not so easy. Theproblems is not that the actual causes of depression are so well hidden from you,but that in most casesyou may choose to not be aware of them.
Alas, too often we don't want to see what's going on in our life. We blame ourselves too much while refusing to realize that the reason for your depression can be external.
Take your job as an example. Do you reallylike it? I'm really happy for you if you do. The problem is thatmost of us don't. But what do we do to solve our depression problems through improving our career? Not much.
Why?I thinkbecause it's hard to change the status quo. We're afraid our manager willsomehow knowand fire us, we are unsure how our spouse will react, and there are endless loads of such lame excuses. It may sound stupid, but we prefersuffer fromgoing to a job we hate instead of admitting a that our career needs significant change.
Think about it. Is your job really worth it? Do you honestly think you can't have anything better even if you tried? I find it hard to believebecause there aren't that many things that can justify the pain of boring daily routine.
Often people can't leave because they think thejob is well paid. That's still not a valid reason. First of all, there are plenty of jobs that pay much better than yours. Second, how much does your happiness cost? What's the price ofyour health? How much would you pay to get cured from depression?
Have no illusions, a job can be extremely depressive if you hate it.After all, that's something that you have to do almost every day for the rest of your life!
Anothergood example is unhappy marriage. You won't believe how many people are afraid to admit their marriage is long dead because they are afraid of divorce!
I agree that divorce is not the prettiest thing in the world, but:
A) No one in saying that youmust divorce. After all, there aredozens of ways to fix your marriage without putting and end to it.
B) Even if divorce seems the only option in your case, it is still more preferrable than living together in hate. People may stay together because they areworried about their kids happiness, but I don't think thechildrenwill enjoy living ina family where mom and dad want to literally tear each other apart!
I know out of my own experience that we can be completely blindif we choose to. However, the point is you don't have to be afraid of the truth because it's the only thing that can heal you from depression!
Sometimes we're forced to make tough, unpleasantand even painful decisions. However, that's something nobody can avoid. Maybe you should face your problems instead of running away from them? Face them, look them in the eyes. That's the only way to stop being depressed once and for all
