Along with John Mellencamp and Neil Young, Nelson established Farm Aid back in 1985 and the charity is poised to celebrate its 25th anniversary on Oct. 2 with all three founders and the Dave Matthews Band in attendance.
For the first time, Farm Aid will be held at a major league baseball stadium, Miller Park, home of the Milwaukee Brewers. The annual concerts have raised more than $37 million to help family farmers struggling to survive corporate takeovers and have featured performances by the likes of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Kenny Chesney, Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson.
DMB is used to sharing a bill with high-profile acts, as the group has been known to play a handful of festivals each summer. Earlier on this summer, in fact, the group closed down the Bonnaroo Music Festival, held in Manchester, Tenn. DMB took the stage on June 13, the fourth and final day of Bonnaroo, filling the headlining spot that Phish headed in 2009. DMB's Bonnaroo gig was wedged between other dates on the band's summer tour, which launched in Hartford, Conn. on May 28. Playing songs like "Water," "Seven," "Jimi Thing," "Tripping Billies," "You Might Die Trying" and "I Can't Stop," DMB proved why fans flock to their live shows year after year.
Summer 2011 will be different, however, as the group issued an announcement on their official website back in May saying, "As we feel the excitement building for this summer, we wanted to let everyone know that after 20 years of consecutive touring, Dave Matthews Band will be taking 2011 off. We feel lucky that our tours are a part of so many people's lives, and wanted to give everyone as much notice as possible. We're excited to make this summer one of our best tours yet, and look forward to returning to the road in 2012." Don't fret yet though, as there are plenty of Dave Matthews Band tickets available for the group's remaining gigs.
Along with shows scheduled in cities like Chula Vista, Calif.; Irvine, Calif.; Los Angeles, Calif.; Boise, Idaho; George, Wash.; Spring, Texas; Dallas, Texas; Omaha, Neb.; Saint Paul, Minn.; Chicago, Ill. and more, the DMB will perform at the Mile High Music Festival in Commerce City, Colo. on Aug. 14. DMB headlined the inaugural Mile High Music Festival back in 2008, and the band's namesake told concert prompter Chuck Morris, "I'm glad that we can make it. It was fun that first year. I think the crowd had a great time and I just remember that there was a real energy in the space...a sort of revitalization thing with our Colorado audience I think."
The Dave Matthews Band may perform a career-spanning set on tour, but the trek is officially in support of their latest album the Grammy-nominated Big Whiskey And The Groogrux King. The band's seventh album is named for the late DMB saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who passed away in August 2009 (new saxophonist Jeff Coffin has since filled his shoes). Big Whiskey And The Groogrux King debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart, buoyed by singles like "Funny the Way it Is," "Why I Am" and "You and Me."
