subject: Car Rental Spain [print this page] Spain is in the top 5 most visited countries in the world, most of those visitors come from either Europe (because it's easy to get to) or South America (where they visit the 'Old Country').
It's easy to understand why this beautiful country attracts so many visitors too, with scenery that can change from mountains of grandeur to rolling fields of olives, to terraced almond groves and anything in between.
You have your pick of ancient historic towns with fabulous buildings and narrow cobbled streets where you really need a small car if you want to drive - even though the locals seem to get vehicles of any size squeezed through!
And of course, the beaches, everything from golden to volcanic grey, sand or pebbles where there are many high rises to beaches where the fir trees come right down to dabble their leaves in the salt spray. To really appreciate the diversity that is Spain, a hire car is almost a 'must'.
Yes, you can certainly see much of Spain from a coach and you won't have to worry about driving or having had a long lunch with plenty of wine but, you also won't be able to stop at a small attractive hotel or bar/restaurant. Nor will you be able to shop in a small out of the way market where you'll find locally made crafts that are used by Spaniards rather than made for tourists.
With a hire car you have the freedom to explore and Spain is worth exploring, the people are warm and friendly and always appreciate it if you try a little Spanish on them, even if it's only Hola! (hello).
There is one thing to be aware of though, if you do hire a car, most car rental companies even those who offer 'fully inclusive' insurance do not cover the tires, undercarriage and windscreen. In Spain however, it is possible to buy insurance to cover this when you pick up your car, so it's always worth asking!
