From late springtime to early fall, the Maritime Provinces play host to a variety of road races and marathons. The courses range from flat, to hilly, to scenic, to coastal to historic, so take your pick. The best way to get information is to ask your travel guide or pick a province and ask the front desk clerk at your hotel. Tim Horton's Marathon takes place in late September in Saint John, NB. It is called the Marathon by the Sea.
The route winds through the downtown, taking runners through residential and industrial areas to Reversing Falls on the Bay of Fundy. The run gets a bit hilly as it draws near the University of New Brunswick. After the University, the run is down hill, back to the downtown, ending at the Saint John City Market, Canada's longest running farmer's market. There are also shorter races for adults and children who don't or can't run the marathon distance of 26.2 miles. These runs are 5k and 10k runs, held either the day before the big event or during the marathon itself.
The New Brunswick Marathon is held in September, while the weather is cooperative, warm and clear with little if any precipitation. Other marathon races occurring in the area include the Halifax Marathon, happening in late May, and the Prince Edward Island Marathon, which takes place a month before the New Brunswick Marathon. Ask your New Brunswick travel guide for information on all three races in order to plan your running holiday accordingly.
