It is against the law for anyone to do work on your gas appliances in the UK unless they are Gas Safe Registered. From April 2009 only a registered Gas Safety engineer can issue a valid gas safety record in the UK. The gas safe register is the new organisation that has replaced the corgi registration scheme. Any gas fitter doing work for you must be on the gas safe register and certified to perform the type of work undertaken.
How do I know if the gas fitter Im working within the UK plumbing gas regulations?
If they cant show you their Gas Safety Register ID card, then they cannot work on your gas equipment. Always ask to see their card. All Gas Safe registered engineers carry a Gas Safe Register ID card. It shows you what they look like and what gas work they are qualified to do. It also gives you a unique licence number that you can use to check they are still on the register. A corgi card is no longer valid. Check their card to see what equipment they are registered to work on. If they put in a gas fire for example, but theyre only Gas Safe registered for pipe work and boilers, they are working illegally. If they are employed by a Gas Safe registered firm and are doing private work in their spare time on the side, they are working illegally. Always ask to see their card.
You should always use a Gas Safe registered engineer to install, repair and service your gas appliances. This includes your central heating system, radiators or hot water system, gas boiler, gas fire, gas cooker or hob. This applies to all equipment connected to natural gas or lpg (liquefied petroleum gas). If you believe an engineer is not registered and working illegally, you should report them to Gas Safe Register.
