Napoleon Hill and Faith
[print this page]
Would you like to know the secret of getting rich and staying that way? There is one historical
figure who knew that secret and now we all can know it too. An amazing author by the name of Napoleon Hill
was commissioned by Andrew Carnegie back in the early 1900's to research this secret based upon the
success of hundreds of people who accumulated vast amounts of wealth seemingly out of nothing.
Wikipedia describes him as "one of the earliest producers of the modern genre of personal-success
literature." In Mr. Hill's book, Think and Grow Rich, he tells about Thomas Edison who only had three
months of schooling, yet found this secret and grew rich beyond all imagination. He shared the secret
with an associate and he too became extremely wealthy. Napoleon Hill, who was born 1883 and died in 1970,
spent 20 years of his life researching hundreds of well-known millionaires and writing about this
Carnegie secret, yet so many people do not know about him. I was among these many until just a few
months ago.
This is the first in a series of short articles in which I'd like to share with you the various parts
of the secret about which Napoleon wrote. There are several concepts involved in this mystery, so
I will talk about them one at a time.
Lets first conside Faith. In his book, Mr. Hill describes Faith as the "chemist of the mind." He says
that when it is blended with thought, the subconscious picks up the vibrations and translates it to
its spiritual equivalent, sends it to the Infinite Intelligence (I'm pretty sure he means God),
just like in the case of prayer. To develop Faith, he writes that a person can create it through the
principle of auto suggestion. Auto suggestion is basically an affirmation or repeated instructions to
the subconscious mind.
When a person does not already have FAITH, it is an extremely difficult concept to grasp, so it is
difficult to explain to someone not familiar with possessing it. At the time of his writing, Mr. Hill
asserted that repetition of affirmations of order to ones subconscious mind was the only known method
of voluntary development of the emotion of Faith. That means repeating something positive to your mind
and ordering it to believe what you say. Some people believe that Faith or Trustfulness is a gift from
God. Napoleon Hill believed and feels he proved many times over that it can also be created from within
the mind by a person who wishes to have it for them self. Personally, I believe that the gift from God
is that humans have the ability to do this and that your belief in yourself, (or faith), is the element
which determines the action of your subconscious mind.
If you have ever read Steven Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, you have run across this concept
before. He also talks about setting goals and how the subconscious mind takes over and propels people in
the direction they wish to go.
This is all I am going to say on the subject of Faith today, and I'll tell you more later while you ponder
this new possibility. I do want to leave you with these famous quotes by Napoleon Hill, so you will be
practicing and exercising your ability to develop faith by repeating them daily for awhile.
"FAITH is the starting point of all accumulation of riches!"
" FAITH is the basis of all "miracles," and all mysteries which cannot be analyzed by the rules of science!"
"FAITH is the only know antidote for FAILURE!"
Exercise your control over your own destiny this way for awhile until I see you again later. So long for now
