subject: Help! - Where Can I Get ADHD Information Without Wasting Too Much Time? [print this page] This is a perfectly natural request, given that we are a quick fix society and we want everything now, this instant, fast results, no waiting and above all for the lowest price! It is exactly the same for getting ADHD information so where can we start?
Well, first the bad news. There are no fast, quick or even definite answers. You want to know the cause of ADHD and what is the best way to treat it? The best brains in the land are working on this right now as we speak. But honestly, the NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) do not yet have definite answers about the cause, diagnosis or treatment of ADHD yet.Watch this space.
So, if you cannot give me answers, at least give me a few facts so that I can shorten my learning curve and get some useful ADHD information.
The first fact is that unless properly treated, children with ADHD will not outgrow it. Why? Because there is no cure as such. But if properly treated many children learn to cope, grow up and be successful, balanced and well adjusted adults.
What do you mean by properly treated? Psychostimulant drugs can help to alleviate some symptoms but that is about it and after three years their effects will start to wane. So, unless the ADHD child is treated with a multiple approach which takes into account the home environment, family dynamics, behavioral issues, diet and a few lifestyle changes, your chances of treating ADHD successfully are pretty slim.
Why is there all this talk of ADHD behavioral therapy? If an ADHD child is never taught about what is acceptable behavior, he can never distinguish that from his normal disruptive behavior.
Parents need to establish what the bottom line is and make everything crystal clear, otherwise the family lurches from one crisis to another with a lot of shouting and yelling in between.
Secondly, ADHD kids love predictability. Routines, ordered structure, a tidy home with less clutter are going to be a real aid in helping ADHD children to manage. Tasks should be broken down, cues given and rules given using positive reinforcement, rather than negative ones. Parents should also mention the rules when they are being followed so that rules can become associated with positive outcomes and rewards which are given afterwards.
Following these simple techniques will be the basis of any child behavior modification program. Once these structures and routines are in place, it will become so much easier to manage your child's diet, exercise program and of course his medication.
If you would like to get some more ADHD information on the natural cures available, I have set up a website where this information is all there on one page. Easy, fast to read. Now you cannot say that I haven't shortened your learning curve!
