subject: Rahul Gandhi brings Broadband (Fibre to panchayat) to Amethi panchayat [print this page] On the first day of his visit, Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi put Sarvan village near Fursatganj in the annals of history by launching a broadband service named as "Fibre to panchayat" technically known as GPON technology. With having state-of-the-art facility, Sarvan village became the first village in India. One optic fibre enables users to make use of this facility to enjoy services like broadband, internet, telephonic service and cable-tv as well. The distribution of optic fibre in village panchayat will be done by India unit of US-based Alphion Corporation Ltd in collaboration with ITI Rae Bareli and BSNL. On this inauguration occasion, he shared the stage with Sam Pitroda, the pioneer behind the information technology revolution.
Driving the point home better among the people there, he said the employment of information technology is necessary to bridge the gap between rich and poor, saying "in this regard, this GPON technology can play a more effective role". "Today, connectivity development in the field of transportation, electricity and information technology is the need of the hour," urging people to make use of this technology readily irrespective of their age. He said through this technology one can get benefited and help oneself to go ahead in the road of development.
Speaking about the growing disparity between the urban and rural development, Rahul Gandhi said that for development to take place in village at the level proportionate to the urban one, each and every facility must be made available to the villagers in order to make parity with their counterpart in urban areas. "GPON is one of such facilities needed to get on the equal footing with your urban brethren," he said.
People at the village were quite enthusiastic about the new technology. Ramchand, a college student, was much excited at the prospect of making use of facility for booking ticket for train and air. Earlier, he used to go to nearby town for this facility.
Earlier, Amethi MP had halted his tour to Sarvan village to pay a patient hearing to the complaints of Fursatganj farmers. They told him that they were bereft of electricity and requested him to look into this matter. He however gave assurance of help to them, saying "if you want the situation to be reformed, then you need to change the present state government."
Early on, as soon as Congeress General Secretary started his three-day tour of his constituency Amethi, two sobbing girls took everyone by surprise when they tried to stop the car of Rahul Gandhi and his entourage. They told him about the police atrocities on their families and apathy of the state government in looking into their grievances. Rahul Gandhi gave them a patient hearing and assurance of help. This very incident once again leaves a question mark on the efficacy of the state government.
