subject: Nutritional Supplements You May Not Know, But You Need Them [print this page]

The problem with most people is that they base their health on how they feel. Just because you feel healthy and in perfect fit now, does not mean you do not need nutritional supplements. With our busy lifestyle, the ever-tempting convenience of fast food, it is now almost impossible to avoid nutritional deficiency. Vitamin supplements provide the necessary nutrients ensuring a healthier life. We need all the nutrients in their proper amounts for optimum health. Since our diets most likely cannot provide all of them, nutritional supplements can be very useful to fill in those gaps.

Vitamin supplements help boost our immune system. The stronger your immune system, the more resistant your body can be against disease. You probably know that popping a tablet or two of Vitamin C can help you avoid colds and related illnesses. Taking vitamins like Vitamin A and E can help to prevent diseases like cancer, heart disease, cataract, and premature aging by getting rid of oxidants and neutralize free radicals. Vitamin E can help to prevent blood clots and fatty plague that builds up in the arteries. Vitamin C can maintain flexibility of blood vessels and improve the circulation of blood and is highly recommended for smokers. Both of these vitamins together can help to prevent Alzheimer's disease. Foliate can improve the blood flow through the arteries and all the B vitamins can help to prevent hearing ailments.

Taking a good multi-vitamin everyday can improve your overall health and give you a sense of general well being. It gives your body a boost physically and mentally. There are multivitamins especially composed for certain age groups, or certain conditions like pregnancy. Children need to build healthy strong bones, and athletes need health vitamins to fight the free radicals produced from working the body.

Even though vitamin supplements are great for your body, taking them in excess can potentially harm your body. The antioxidants in supplements have a pro-oxidant effect on the body that can harm the arteries and can do a lot of damage to the body. Always consult a doctor before you start taking any such supplements.
