subject: Magnetic Separator: An Industrial Necessity [print this page]

Magnetic separation is the process of separating tramp iron, the unwanted or damaged metal and ferrous impurities, from non-magnetic materials. A magnetic separator is used for this process. The major components of Magnetic Separators are electromagnets or rare earth magnets. These magnetic separators separate magnetic mixtures from non magnetic ones. They are used to shield vital process equipment and helps in producing a clean final product. Magnetic separators are used in various different sectors like mining, glass, cement, ceramic, food processing, chemical and plastics. The minerals which are extracted contain three important properties:

Ferro Magnetic property- Ferro Magnetic minerals contain magnetic properties hence they stick to the magnetic separator and easily removed.

Paramagnetic property- Paramagnetic minerals are attracted into a magnetic field and accordingly pulled out when passed through a magnetic field.

Diamagnetic property- Diamagnetic minerals, if passed through a magnetic field, will be repelled from the field.

In food processing industries, magnetic separators are used to remove any contaminating magnets from food products. The same process goes for the mining, glass, cement, ceramic, chemical and plastic industries. Magnets are effective in the mining industries as it prevents sharp metal shards from cutting, ripping or tearing conveyor belts. The type and size of the magnet to be used in any industry will depend on the location and the size of the materials. Separation equipment includes:

Plate Magnets- used for extraction of impurities and protection of equipment from these impurities

Magnetic Tubes- these are used for extracting impurities from dry and liquid products.

Grate Magnet- used for extracting small and fine iron particles from closed bins, chutes, ducts or vessels.

Liquid Line Magnets- used for extracting fine particles of iron from liquid lines.

Suspended separators

Suspended Electromagnetic Separators-these are used for overhead suspended applications. These require direct current in order to generate a magnetic field.

Suspended Permanent Separators- used for removing impurities from products like wood, coal or rock conveyed on belts. Permanent magnetic separators are created by magnetizing anon-magnetic material like iron, nickel or cobalt.

Deep Reach Separators- heavy flow of material may choke close-mouthed separators but these deep reach separators are open-mouthed and extract bulk of impurities.

Permanent magnetic pulleys- convert conveyor belts into self cleaning moving separators.

Cartridge Magnetic Separators- used to remove tramp iron from dry or free flowing food and chemicals.

Depending on their usage and configuration, each magnetic separator is of different weight, size and dimension built to suit the different sizes and quantity of the tramp iron to be removed.

Magnetic separators are designed for separating magnetic admixtures from non-magnetic ones. The magnetic separators are either based on permanent magnets or electromagnets. Magnetic separators are available in different shapes and sizes. Apart from separating they also give enough security to the products and the equipments. The magnetic separator consists of non magnetic container and magnetic means to generate magnetic field gradient within the container in which, the magnetic field is stronger.

In modern times there are many magnetic products which are launched by the companies year after year for the medicinal purposes. Magnetic wraps, braces, bands, jewelleries etc. are now very commonly used by the people. Magnets nowadays, are acting complementary to the medicines. They provide relief to the patients from many problems like gouts, stiffness, muscular pain, joints pain etc.

Products normally purified by the magnetic separator are industrial materials, fodder, food products, chemical and other free flowing materials etc.

Magnetic separators are very efficient device which helps in giving good output. They are easy to handle and operate and provide valuable protection to your equipments from ferrous contaminants. The magnetic separators are available in various sizes to meet different requirements in different circumstances.

Magnetic separators are utilized in various industries like mining industries, glass, cement, ceramic, food processing, chemical, plastics and glass industries etc.

Depending on their usage and configuration magnetic separators are of different types like hump magnets, in line magnets, suspended magnets, plate magnets etc.
