subject: Utilizing Hydroseeders And Hydromulchers [print this page]

There are many options today for the method of adding grass to an area, whether that be residential new construction, golf course construction, utility and new highway construction or even the reclamation of mine sites. With each option for new grass comes pros and cons that must be reviewed before a bid is accepted and work is started. Each different method is suited for specific landscapes or soil and weather conditions, so take the time to ensure the most appropriate method is being utilized.

Using a hydromulcher is an efficient, economical and fast process for grass planting. Mulch, fertilizer, seed and water are mixed together in a hydromulching machine and that mixture is sprayed onto the ground. The areas are usually irrigated and the result of this application usually is referred to as "fine turf." This is a very consistent method of grass planting when the proper materials are used and solid results can usually be seen in about three to four weeks. This method may be more expensive than some others, but is significantly less expensive than solid sodding. Hydromulching is highly recommended when quality results are desired and good irrigation is available. If the original area is well-manicured and smooth, this process will yield great results with a smooth, manicured grass.

Using a hydroseeder is appropriate where budget constraints are a concern but one desires a similar process and somewhat similar result as that of hydromulching. This method uses little to no mulch and the results are not nearly as consistent as using the higher quality hydromulcher. It is important for those seeking bids on this kind of work to be aware of the difference between the two types of grass planting and ensure they have clear expectations of the costs and the methods they want used. While both of these methods have excellent uses in today's market, when a higher quality result is needed then hydromulching is the preferred method of planting. The market for high-quality grass planting is growing considerably and having the expertise, knowledge and machinery to properly use a hydromulcher or hydroseeder can lead to a successful business.
