Wicked is based on the popular book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. The musical premiered at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco in spring 2003 and moved to the Gershwin Theatre on Broadway that fall. The original stars of the production included Idina Menzel as Elphaba, Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda and Joel Grey as the Wizard.
