Mompreneur is a new term for women who choose to start a home business while parenting their children and operating their households. It is a label that identifies a trend, really more of a business revolution.

The movement is in its infancy and hard to quantify. That newcomers or WAHMs (Work At Home Moms) are rapidly growing is without doubt.

Earlier generations equated 'mom' with 'homemaker.'

The women's movement made major inroads in the social perception of this role. In seeking equal rights , women were challenged by new expectations that they must compete in business with men.

There was a quiet, societal perspective that the woman who chose to stay at home was less educated or less intelligent than women who worked in the traditional office especially their male counterparts. Today this view is changing and soon may be only a minority opinion.

It may be due to the poor economy.

It may be due to the present economic situation.

Simultaneously, the social and economic pendulum is now settling back towards the middle. Many women who joined the workplace and forestalled motherhood have found that their natural maternal instincts can only be satisfied with actual, rather than delegated, parenting. These women want to play an important role in their children's lives; that is a non-negotiable objective.

Women facing this challenge are confronted with opposing desires. The need for income remains, whether as a primary or additional means to support their families. The desire to parent in person persists, nonetheless.

Women facing this challenge are confronted with conflicting desires. The need for income remains, whether as a main or additional means to support their household. The desire to parent in person persists, nonetheless.

Women have had to evolve to reconcile these polar obstacles. Functioning in survival mode has taught women to handle daily household duties while feeding a baby. Until quite recently, some women obtained personal satisfaction and social interactions by peddling cosmetics or jewelry in their free time. In the 'old days,' fewer possibilities were available.

Women have had to grow to survive this conundrum. Operating in survival mode has taught women to manage daily household duties while feeding a baby. Not so long ago, some women found fulfillment and social interactions by selling cosmetics or jewelry part-time. In the 'old days,' fewer options were open to them.

The internet is speedily gunning down that limitation. For women of differing business backgrounds and even those with virtually no business backgrounds, the internet is a new portal to the universe.

Business conference calls can be made while cleaning or doing laundry. Women home journalists can research and write at their home base when the kids are asleep.

For women willing to assess their abilities and interests and use them differently (but use them still) , the options are limitless.

For those with less experience, the internet can become a phenomenal educator. An easy "Google" search can point you to schooling for needed skills, ranging from internet marketing to insurance billing, to software design to investigative research. And the list continues...

The WAHM is becoming acknowledged as a valid contender in more business arenas than ever before. Where once this possiblity was only a dream. It is now real and happening daily. It is stimulating. It earns. It is fulfilling. These 'perks' are exactly what the doctor ordered to cheer up the stay at home mom!
