Officials understand that communities are much safer when neighbors are willing to look out for one another and that by watching your neighbor's back, you're actually making the entire neighborhood safer, which you can benefit from as well. That's why people in Omaha are placing such an emphasis on coming together to work to lower crime within their community. One of the main solutions that kept coming up over and over was the importance of home alarm systems.
People often recognize that home alarms can help reduce crime within their own home. Clearly, if an intruder breaks in and causes the alarm to go off, they'll have to leave the house immediately if they want to get away without getting caught, and they'll likely be caught by the police as they try to escape. Yet many residents are surprised to learn that installing an alarm can increase the safety of their entire neighborhood. Many times when a criminal breaks into a house, they've tried to scout that house out and determine that it is an easy target. That means that criminals are often lurking in a neighborhood and checking out several houses at the same time, which is why several break-ins tend to happen at a time within the same area. At that point, the authorities will already be responding to the situation so resolving the crime doesn't depend on neighbors engaging in any vigilante activities to try to bring about justice on their own. It does, however, provide the perfect opportunity for neighbors to band together to start talking about ways they can make their community safer, and who knows, maybe they'll even commit to creating a neighborhood watch program. The possibilities for positive change are endless, but it's clear that installing alarms and working with neighbors is a great place to start.
