subject: 4 Unusual Ways To Work Out Throughout The Year [print this page]

Exercising regularly is important to any weight loss regime and whether you walk 30 minutes each day of the week or you attend any of the Birmingham gyms for an intense two hour work out three times a week, it's important that you continually put your body through some form of exercise.

Whilst attending Birmingham gyms or any type of health club throughout the UK is a great way to keep the weight off, for something a little different, check out the following four unusual ways to work out.

1. Head up to Scotland - the Highland games are arguably the most popular Scottish sporting events north of the border, so much so that they are now recreated in various places across the globe, including the largest Highland games event in the Northern Hemisphere, which takes place in Pleasanton, California.

If you're in the UK, however, head up to Dunoon in Scotland over the last weekend in August for the Cowal Highland Gathering.

Featuring a range of traditional Highland games, from the caber toss to the Scottish hammer throw, whilst they may all seem to require a certain degree of strength, there are variations of most to suit smaller, lighter and weaker competitors.

2. Try the Lake District - if you enjoy walking on the treadmill at the gym, you're bound to find walking in the great outdoors a fantastic experience and there aren't many better places to do it in the UK than the Lake District.

Stretching for 885 square miles, although a substantial amount of this National Park is made up of dozens of different lakes, there also features a vast array of mountains and peaks (meaning there's something for everyone, regardless of their walking experience), including the UK's highest peak, Scafell Pike, which stands at 3,209 feet tall.

3. Take the family to the beach - when you think of the beach, you instantly think of relaxing on your back with the sun blazing down on you, meaning you have to do no exercise at all.

Add young children into the equation, however, and going to the beach can be a particularly good way to work out.

For example, you'll find that you're likely to be running around the beach playing football and chasing the children, as well as playing and jumping in the sea with them, before you head back to work out your arms whilst you dig holes in the sand and make dozens of sand castles.

4. Cross the channel...without a boat - stood on the beach at Dover, you can see the Calais coastline easily on a clear day. Sure, it's in the distance, but it doesn't look that far away and it's easy to think that you can swim it, right?

Not recommended to do by yourself or without the guidance of properly trained instructors, if you really want to test yourself, you can attempt to swim across English Channel. A distance of 21 miles at its shortest point, it's no easy feat - 21 miles is the equivalent to just over 675 lengths of an Olympic sized swimming pool - and a lot more difficult than you might first believe.
