subject: Second Hand Cars Purchase Have Clarity About What You Want [print this page]

All of us love to get a good bargain and would want to be a beneficiary of such events as often as possible. Very often these bargains are associated with the purchase of second hand items where somebody known to us manages to get the item of his or her choice at prices that are too good to be true. Occasionally we also hear of people getting superb deals on even second hand cars that were purchased online through used car sites.

However, these cannot be considered as the norm and it would be better if you approached the issue of buying second hand cars through the conventional route. This is not to imply that online purchases are fraught with risk and the internet should be avoided. Far from it. The internet can be used effectively by you to find out all relevant information about any particular model you wish to buy. You can compare prices of that model across sites; get technical details, read any reviews about the model with regard to its performance and so on. You can then approach a dealer or private seller armed with that information so that you do not get ripped off and you are in a better position to negotiate.

Irrespective of you buying your vehicle from a dealer or private seller, there are certain things you need to be clear about as under:

1.Shortlist a minimum of three models at a budget you can afford so that you can get at least one of them when you go looking for them.

2.As mentioned earlier, have all relevant information with you about these models so that you are well informed and can take a decision based on merit. This way you will also not make a decision swayed by the sales person or under any pressure.

3.Do a data check of the vehicle you have shortlisted to understand whether it has met with any accident, its service history and ownership.

Once you have shortlisted the car of your choice, you need to examine it closely. Check the body for any dents, scratches and inspect the cabin as well. While clean upholstery is desirable, you may not always get it and you would have to settle for what is available if everything else is okay. Do not get swayed by the electronic gadgets and other fittings. They are more cosmetic and are not something you should be particularly impressed with when buying the vehicle.

When you buy second hand cars from private sellers, you may get the vehicle at a cheaper price but would not be able to negotiate any warranty or get anything extra by way of a total check up of the vehicle before the purchase. You have to rely on your own due diligence before buying the car and would be well advised to take along a good car mechanic who would be able to detect any anomalies during the test drive.
