Archery is available for many aspects such as hunting, pastime and competitive sporting. Archery has diminished over the years due to rifle sports and hunting. However there is a niche of people who prefer the silent art. Archery was initially created as a tool used during war time and for hunting. The considerable difficulty in mastering the skill of archery has become easier thanks to new archery supplies. Despite the emergence of rifle sports archery still has a loyal following in competitive archery and as a club sport. Due to the need for traits such as patience and discipline archery is an extremely selective sport and it is common to see many beginners give up after a certain period of time.

Competitions are found in all parts of Europe and the United States which require archery supplies. FITA (Federation Internationale de Tir a l'Arc), outdoor field archery and target archery are several types of competitions available for adepts. A grading system is used during these competitions to place competitors in appropriate divisions. Several different rounds are used to judge the competitors in field archery.

The field round is still target with a circular bulls eye scoring system. The rings each increase in points as the circle gets smaller the highest point is achieved by landing a shot on the bulls eye. The scoring system is 3 for the outer most rings and increasing as it progresses to the center.

The hunter round utilizes a distance oriented exercise. Archers are supposed to land a shot on target placed 70 yards away for adults. For children the hurdle is usually marked at 30 to 40 yards. The hunter round utilizes the same scoring system as the field round.

The final round the animal round consists of a simulated hunting exercise. An animal shaped targets are placed at point is shot from three points. Failure to shoot the target from the first location will reduce the points the participant can gain.
