subject: 5 Reasons Why Your Next Car Should Be Electric [print this page]

I am going to convince you that your next car should be an electric one. I am not talking about hybrid cars, I mean pure electric! You may hold a deep seated prejudice against electric vehicles, and in the past they were at best a novelty. However new battery and motor technology have made them a viable replacement for your main everyday vehicle. Here are 5 reasons why your next car should be electric.

1. Cheaper to run:

The per mile costs for an electric vehicle, when taking into account cost of fuel, are a tiny fraction of what an equivalent gas powered car costs to run. Plus if you charge your car overnight from your homes power system, you can often take advantage of your utility companies reduced night time off-peak tariffs, to make it even cheaper.

2. Kind to the environment:

Electric vehicles create zero pollution, and have zero emissions. Making them the kindest form of transport to the environment.

3. Low maintenance:

Electric motors have very few moving parts, and therefore require very little maintenance. You don't have to change the oil, or top up the water coolant, (as they have neither.) Plus the modern DC motor lasts for a long time, much longer than a gas powered motor.

4. They are practical:

You may remember the electric cars of yesteryear. They were slow, and had such a tiny range between charges that they were almost unusable, a novelty item at best. Their modern equivalent however accelerates as fast as a conventionally powered car, has a good top speed, and up to 200 miles or more usable range between charges. Making them as versatile as the fossil fuel powered car you probably drive now.

5. More cost efficient in the long run:

Modern electric vehicles keep their value longer, and therefore have a higher resale value. Whilst they may cost more initially, the vehicle will in fact pay you back in two ways. The first way being the saving in fuel and maintenance costs, and the second being the higher resale value, because you get more of your initial investment back when you sell it.

If you still remain unconvinced, you may be interested to know that many people are converting their own cars to electric power. It can be surprisingly inexpensive to do, and before you dismiss it as beyond your capabilities, you don't need to be an expert mechanic, basic skills will do fine.

I hope I have shown you why your next car should be electric. You will be helping yourself to save money, and you will do your bit for a greener planet too.
