subject: Marketing Tip: Forget About Life For Awhile [print this page]

Ever wonder why illegal drugs fetch such a high price? It's not just because they are illegal, but also because they are designed to make people forget about the problems they suffer in the "real world," which fulfills a very strong need in many people's lives.

Look at video games, movies, fictional novels, television, booze, and yes; even sex-oriented products or services. All of these are designed to make people forget about the real world for a while.

People also hate to do things that are necessities of life. Shaving, cooking, bathing, commuting to work, grocery shopping, cleaning. While you can't make most of these things completely go away, you can make the tasks, or additional tasks related to doing these necessities, easier or more enjoyable.

For example: a self-cleaning electric razor. It doesn't make the hair on your face or legs stop growing, but now you don't have to waste extra time cleaning the razor afterward. Now, if only I could afford one of those self-cleaning razors, I'd give up the blade forever! The high price of a self-cleaning razor is reflective of the desire for such a convenience. People are willing to spend much more for the minor conveniences that make their life easier.

Ask yourself, "What does my product or service do, or what can it do, to make people happy; or at least relieve suffering in their lives?"

How does your product or service meet this need? Once you know the answer to that question, tell your potential customers how and why your product or service meets that need.

One more point about making life more enjoyable: What is the trick to convincing your customers that your product will make their life more enjoyable? I'll give you a hint. Something I learned during that dark time in my life when I worked as a telemarketer:

Get them imagining how enjoyable or better life would be with your product.

I nearly tripled sales of a product I sold online when I changed my webpage to get people thinking about how their lives would change if they purchased that particular product from me.

The best part of all: My product was priced around 30% higher than similar products from competing sellers! Why did consumers buy from me when it cost more than similar products from other vendors? Very simply, they came to believe that my product would change their lives in a way that somebody else's product couldn't.

Remember, truly great marketing will get consumers to buy your product or service, instead of your competitors, no matter the cost.
