Whoever started that rumor has probably never heard of Battalion Commander - Jack Wilson. Jack is one of the most talented and respected soldiers in the history of the U.S. Armed forces.
He has been assigned the responsibility of Battalion Commander of a Basic Training unit at the Home of the Infantry Fort Benning, Georgia. He's in command of new soldiers and teaches subjects like basic rifle marksmanship, Uniform Code of Military Justice, reacting to fire, command climate and even communications, among many other soldier skills needed to survive in a hostile environment.
Jack is known for his emphatic attitude and a wicked sense of humor. He is also known for his inspiring speeches.
One day he decides to give his unit a surprise. He is so proud of his unit and their performance that he decides to award each of them a small gift. A souvenir which would be remembered specifically for the purpose it was given.
This reminds him of an old friend Terry, whose son once gifted him an army gift. It was an audio button that chanted Hooah! on a click. Jack decides to do the same. He calls his wife and asks her to order about 60 of such Hooah! buttons.
On the eve of their graduation, he holds a meeting for all unit members. "Good evening guys". "Good evening sir"
"Thank you all for coming out on such short notice, not that you really had a choice, but I appreciate it all the same. I'm surprised to see all of your sad faces."
"I'm not here to make a speech and ruin your evening. You folks make me proud and I am pleased to have served with each one of you."
"Tomorrow as you leave this base, you'll have the honor to fight for America, to be a soldier, to make history." And I'm damn sure each one of you will do your country proud." "Are you boys ready for it?"
There's a huge roar of Hooah! "God bless you all and God Bless America"
"Now, the real reason I dragged all your sorry asses out here is in this bag."
Jack pulls out a sack filled with shiny Hooah! audio buttons, 1 army gift for each member. Here's to all of you for a "Job well done!"
They all press the button to hear: HOOAH! There's a chorus of hooahs! across the room.
All the graduating soldiers love their Hooah! buttons. Many order them for their friends and loved ones.
Since that day, the departing soldiers under Jack's command have now started expecting a Hooah! button from him as a parting gift.
What a way to bring home the military culture. Commander Jack Wilson surely makes his celebration a one to remember. Even today if you enter his office you'll see a Hooah! button at his desk.
