subject: Treatment For Ringing In The Ears - Can You Believe That Drugs Can Cause Tinnitus [print this page]

If you have tinnitus, the first question you will ask is 'is there a treatment for ringing in the ears'?

The second question will be 'what causes it'? And the incredible truth is that it could be caused by some of the medicines you are taking and the simple treatment could be to stop taking them.

Many doctors prescribe drugs to their patients without ever bothering to make them aware that one of the side effects could be the onset of tinnitus. In fact it is left to the individual to read the leaflet that comes with prescription drugs and which list the contra-indications and the side effects.

However, we all know that many of these leaflets can be extremely lengthy and some are so difficult to read because of the small print that many of us do not bother.

It is also possible that you may have been on this medication for some time and do not think to link it to the onset of tinnitus.

This is why it is so important to ask questions when you are prescribed a new drug and to read the information that comes with it. There are too many prescription drugs that cause tinnitus to list here, but they include the likes of commonly prescribed drugs such as Prozac.

Even more worryingly, a whole range of over the counter drugs can also cause tinnitus as a side effect. These are brands that everyone recognises and takes on a regular basis without a second thought about what the consequences might be.

These over the counter drugs include the following, which are probably found in most medicine cabinets around the world:

Alka Seltzer

Aspirin

Ibuprofen

Pepto Bismal

So if you have tinnitus and have not been able to identify a cause, take a close look at your current medicine and drug usage. You might be surprised to find that they could be the cause of your problem.

You will need to talk to your doctor about whether stopping these drugs will make your tinnitus go away as each case will be different.

There are many other causes of tinnitus and an equal number of types of treatment for ringing in the ears.
