subject: Coping With Flood Damage [print this page]

"Floods are some of nature's terrifying disasters which can cost millions of dollars and sometimes even lives. As soon as water subsides, people face a problem regarding flood damage.

The first thing you should do is to contact your insurance company and inquire if they cover such natural disasters and how they could help you. You should have a list of total property damages and take photos of your flooded residence or business establishment for proof.

The next step is cleaning up. Remove as much mud as you can before flushing the rest with water. Sanitize the flooded area including all the pieces of furniture and fixtures and all other objects come in contact with the flood water because flood water is loaded with pathogens.

Make sure that you disinfect the entire kitchen to avoid spreading of illnesses. When pathogens come in contact with the food we eat, this can easily get to us. Soak your kitchenware with hot water for a few minutes. Include counters, cup boards and others before you store them.

Beds, couches and other upholstery should be let to dry. Try removing any mud off them. Most upholstery can still be used if they are cleaned by professionals. Do not attempt to clean them yourself as flooded upholstered furniture pieces are full of pathogens. Documents, books and photographs should be dried carefully to avoid more damage. Partially dried books can be pressed together to prevent the paper from crumpling.

Call an electrician and have him take care of all your electrical appliances. Don't plug them yet because you are at risk of being electrocuted. If you have vehicles, contact your car insurance and don't forget to take pictures as proof. Some owners sell or trade in their cards or sometimes brought to repair shops for servicing.

The key here is to always be prepared. Be attentive for warnings and listen to news forecasts so that you can be informed with upcoming typhoons.

Floods don't only cause physical damage but emotional and physical stress as well. Look out for your family and yourself and seek professional help if necessary.
