Many decisions must be made before installing shades. First, you must decide where they will go: on the inside or outside of your windows. If you would like to put them on the inside, they will be mounted to both jambs; if on the outside, they will go to both brackets. When conducting an inside mount, measure the length and width in order to determine which set of shades will be bought. To complete the task, take measurements from the top, middle and bottom of the window. Next, use the smaller width to decide the shade width. The longer section of the window will also be the length of the window shades. When mounting outside, make a decision as to where the top of the window shades will be and how far you would like them to come out to the sides.
After making a final decision on where the window shades will go and have obtained a preferred set, proceed to the installation process. When doing an inside mount, the roller shades should not touch the top of the frame or other obstacles. Also make sure that the brackets you are installing are in the frame and are level with one another.
To perform an outer mount, the roller shades must again not touch the frame top of anything else that will prevent free movement. The brackets are installed with the same rules: level and aligned. The window shades, if installed correctly, will have easy movement. Allow about 1/8 inch of free space for easy rotation.
A third mounting possibility is the ceiling mount. This is another way of mounting outside. When installing, make sure the roller shades do not come into contact with the top of the ceiling or any other obstructions. When installing brackets, position them on the ceiling and, like before, make sure they are aligned nearly perfect and are level. If shades are installed correctly, they should easily and freely move between the brackets. Again, try to leave at least 1/8 inch of additional space to ensure smooth mobility of the mechanism.
Spring roller and continuous loop are two main categories of shades. When installing spring rollers: put them in the brackets then continue to place the round end pin to the circle hole. The same steps are used for the other end, as well. Continuous loop installation is as follows: start by putting the inserts in the brackets. Then, put shades in plastic insert/bracket. After that, the round pin goes into the plastic insert/bracket.
When all is done, the roller shades will need to be tested. Spring rollers will normally be lowered about 16 inches in order to perform spring tightening. To do this, take the window shades from their brackets and roll them up. When that is done, put them back and test tightness of the spring. The clutch of a continuous loop is removable if the chain stop needs to be adjusted.
Most roller shades come with instructions. However, if the window shades are re-installed because they were used elsewhere, they may need adjustments by a local hardware store professional.
