If you live in the city, a rural college may seem appealing ? but you may miss those city lights quicker than you think. Consider climate changes as well ? will you cope with snow, rain or heat that you are not used to? There might be times when you want your family to be closer rather than farther away, although you will not admit it now.
How Big Is It
If you prefer smaller classes and more personal attention, then go for a smaller college but if you want a college that offers a wider range of majors and more activities, go for a larger college. Also, assess the student body , gender and diversity, where will you fit in better?
Dorm? Apartment?
Are dorms, apartments, or other housing facilities available? Are they old or modern? Are you willing to share a room or a bathroom? Although it does not appeal to everyone, sharing facilities may be considered part of the college experience.
Quality of tuition
What kind of reputation does the college have regarding graduate rate and success? What kind of pressure can you expect in terms of your results? Are there regular placements of students in summer internships and co-op programs? What level of resources are available to students? Most importantly, does the college offer the course you wish to study, and if so, does it specialize in this field?
Extracurricular Activities
Do you see yourself joining a fraternity or sorority, if your college has a Greek system? What is the school spirit like, and are there sports and other activities available? Although certainly not the main reason you are going to college, the social life on campus will be important to your experience there.
School Fees
Cost will be a factor in your decision, even if there are many available options for financial aid. You should look at public and private colleges, and compare what each has to offer.
The best way to decide which college you want to go to is to research the ones you are interested in, online and with family, friends, teachers and counsellors, then visit your shortlist. To get a feel for the campus, attend a class, visit the dorms, eat in the dining hall, and speak to students already there. You should take the time to consider what the right choice is, since you'll be spending four or more years there. You will perform better at a college that you like and enjoy.
